The Johns Hopkins Hellenic Students Association co-hosted a private event at the Walters Art Museum featuring the famous Archimedes Palimpsest Exhibition on Thursday, November 10, 2011.
The event went amazingly well: There was a very interesting speech given by the curator, William Noel, a guided tour to the exhibition and a light reception.
Hon. Aris Melissaratos (Sr. Advisor to the Johns Hopkins President and former Secretary of Business & Economic Development), Congressman John P. Sarbanes, Nick H. Tsakalos (Co-owner of the H&S Bakery, Northeast Foods, Inc., Schmidt, Harbor East Development), Anna Z. Pappas (Walters Art Museum patron), Gregory C. Pappas (Founder and President of the Greek America Foundation), Michael S. Kosmas (Chair Hospitality Lawyer at Gallop Law), Chrys P. Kefalas (Trial Attorney for Health Care Practice at the U.S. Department of Justice), Paul Kotrotsios (President of the Hellenic American Council and President of the HERMES International Expo), Jason Filippou (Executive Director of the Greektown CDC), Andreas Akaras (Foreign Affairs Advisor to Rep. Sarbanes), Georgia Vavas (Member of the Baltimore-Peireus Sister Cities Committee) and many others were among our guests. We would like to thank all of them for being there. (Some of them had to travel from Washington D.C., New York, Chicago and Pennsylvania!)
The event attracted the Johns Hopkins and Baltimore Media and will be either featured or acknowledged in many newspapers and magazines.
We would like to thank Andrea R. Vespoint (Community Outreach Director at the Walters), Anna Z. Pappas (Walters patron), Will Noel (Curator of the Exhibition) and the rest of the Walters Art Museum Team. Without them, this event would be impossible.
We would also like to thank all the media and reporters: The Johns Hopkins News-Letter, the Johns Hopkins Gazette, the National Herald, the Hellenic News of America, the Greek America Magazine, the Baltimore Daily Record and the Johns Hopkins Rising.
Many thanks to the photographers of the night, Lauren Preller and Will Kirk. They did a great job capturing every second of this amazing event that had a great impact on everyone attending.

On the next day, some of our most prominent guests were asked to comment on the event that our Association hosted. Here are the quotes:
“The Archimedes Exhibition was a fantastic example if modern science making it possible for scholars to discover such classic writings from several thousand years ago. The ability to look at the real writings of someone as important as Archimedes is a tribute to human inquisitiveness. Mr. Petrocheilos’ enthusiasm and incredible networking ability rallied a significant cross section of Baltimore’s Greek American Community to attend the lecture and see the impressive exhibition. This was a gathering of elected officials, industry leaders, academic leaders, community leaders and regular citizens from throughout Baltimore’s Greek Community. A real accomplishment by Mr. Petrocheilos.”
Aris Melissaratos
''Archimedes' contributions to mathematics, physics, engineering, astronomy, invention and innovation have helped shape the course of human history. To study the great accomplishments of extraordinary thinkers such as Archimedes inspires all of us to reach beyond the impossible. The exhibition of the
Archimedes Palimpsest at the Walter's Art Museum celebrates the great influences of Classical Greece in art, science and philosophy and reminds us all to be cognizant of historic and scientific truths. George Petrocheilos and the Hellenic Students Association of the Johns Hopkins University deserve recognition for their enthusiastic promotion and support of this outstanding exhibition.''
Congressman John P. Sarbanes
‘‘I flew from Chicago to see this wonderful exhibition that brings the "real Greece" to the forefront of American society and allows people to see the amazing contributions of the Greeks to the world. Like his forefathers, George Petrocheilos' civic pride and dedication led to a great event that was attended by an amazing group of Greek Americans representing a diverse cross section of the city.’’
Gregory C. Pappas
‘‘Superb event and impressive presentation, very much needed in our society to be able to see and review one of the oldest books like Archimedes' and connect the past with the present.
Mr. Petrocheilos initiative was very well taken and I feel it benefited all present. It is a must see Exhibition. Congratulations to George and all involved! ’’
